Modern Audience’s Obsession with Violence and Bloodletting in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Monster and fairy narratives as those seen in Twilight and Harry Potter inspired cult-like readership, especially among younger audiences who were excited by the fantasy worlds depicted in these works. It was hard to forget a tale about a monster that swallowed kids, and the awe and fear such stories inspired contributed to their popularity. However, it appears that the age of technology and increasing scientific understanding of the universe have undermined the make-believe literary worlds depicted in fantasy tales. For instance, the knowledge that monsters do not exist would make it hard for readers to believe fantasy tales, and would only read them for their literary relevance. On the other hand, the contemporary younger audience has become immersed in a culture in which technology inspires science-fiction, creating a world that the technology-savvy average audience can identify and relate with. The success of Suzanne Collins’ novel The Hunter Games demonstrate this reality by creating a world in which people’s lives are dictated by technology. Thus, the shift from books within the fantasy genre to the gritty and realistic worlds of science-fiction dystopia creates a more believable world to younger audiences who can relate with technology and violence better than the magic in fairy tales.
