Invasion of Granada
Events that led to the 1983 inversion of grenada by the association of the eastern carribian states and the US.
The main excuse for the attack was the safekeeping of Americans. Reagan officials had falsely said that the airport was not operating, this left no escape route for the students to flee. The US officials had to put pressure on the islands to stop it’s regular flights and sea links from operating. This could have limited the americans who wanted to depart from the island. Hence an excuse to attack.
It was revealed that their was a Cuban army expansion on the island. President Reagan falsely said that U.S. army found six large stores full of weapons that were reserved for Cuban army involvement in Africa and Central America. The fact is, there were only three warehouses that had few small weapons that had been seized earlier by the coup officials from the famous militias (Zunes).
Many knew that Grenada was setting a poor example for other weak Caribbean states. Its gorvernment decisions concerning other countries was not ready to obey the American government, neither was it willing to have its economy controlled by the american gorvement interest. Generally, Grenada through the New Jewel Movement was approching a critical level of housing, health care, participatory democracy, literacy, and economic freedom.
Description of the new jewel movement
The new jewel movement (NJM) was officially started on 11 March 1973 as a coalition of the Joint Endeavour for Welfare, Education, and Liberation (JEWEL). It also acted as a Movement for Assemblies of the People (MAP), and it was guided by lawyer Maurice Bishop. From 1973 to 1979, the NJM was an opposing political party active in Grenada. During the 1970s, the political condition in Grenada became continuously devided and brutal. Electroral alliance was created in the 1976 general elections whereby the corparate founded the People's Alliance resulting from the merger of the Grenada National Party and the United People's Party. Nonetheless, the coalition lost to the reigning Grenada United Labour Party in elections that were identified as fraudulent by international observers (Adkin 45).
