Existentialism During The 20th Century
Existentialism is a chronological concept that talks and puts into act the being of a person (Solomon, page 4). It brings into concept the theme of responsibility through management of a person’s actions. (Nigel et al 10) Existentialism brings into focus the early twentieth century philosophy which was based upon the realisation of existence and the different ways the human beings found themselves on this world. (Solomon, page 12) It greatly defines and shows how the humans first existed then after a given moment of time each begins to find new dimensions of life which change him or her after sometime. In simpler terms existentialism is a philosophy which is greatly concerned with finding the true definition of a person and finding the meaning of life through acts of free will and choice. Till to today’s world, the human self is still trying through different ways to find out who and what purpose they serve in this life and the life afterwards.( Barret, page 5) They make these choices through past undergone experiences. Through this the result forms that one’s choices become centralised and unique. A person who is an existentialist strongly has the belief that a person should be forced to choose without any external obligations. Existentialism always takes into concern the key facts such as the human is subject to free will, character is made up through choices, the decision a person makes are primarily accompanied by stress and consequence, the true nature of man is brought out when the person id fighting to get his dimension of life and the human concept is chosen through the different life choices. (Solomon, page 36)
There are no set or collection of beliefs that make up existentialism since it is made up of religious and political ideologies. It came up after the realm second. This took place after the community now general had developed a feeling of giving up when the war already took place. (Solomon, page 14) This despair was articulated through the logicians in the 1970. These philosophers came up from different life stands. Some were spiritual, atheists and administrative frontrunners. Although the concept of existentialism had existed long before the World War 2. Immediately after the World War 1 that was early in the nineteenth century most people had given up and the confusion on the human self greatly covered the people.(Nigel et al, page 20) This need saw the emergence of different philosophers who helped the society realise their true self. Kierkegaard was the first who saw the need of religious faith to understand the need of self-realisation. Edmund Husserl followed and encouraged the people to have self-consciousness on what they believed in their hearts and saw it right to do. Martin encouraged societies for the essential through action. Martin alleged that human character should be realised and improved in acts of action which bring out the nature of human. Jean Paul Sartre followed with the theme of choice to bring out responsibility. (Sartre, page 41) Albert Camus was the last and proposed that the life was absurd and encouraged the people to rebel against this acts and never to participate in this wrong acts. Camus fortified the use ensuring responsibility.
The most influential philosophers during the twentieth century was Jean Paul Sartre who was a great renowned writer. His literacy work was the main tool used to spread existentialism thinking. Sartre was bestowed a price for his literacy effort but refused to accept the award. Sartre proposed that the human nature was not fixed and choice brought responsibility. (Sartre, page 23) However roots of existentialism began through Kierkegaard in the primary 19th era. Kierkegaard claimed that an individual was accountable for giving true meaning concerning life. Other well renowned writers during the twentieth century and brought further definition of the term existentialism included: Albert Camus, Gabriel marcel, Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers, Freidrich Nietzche and Miguel de Unamumo.
In the first periods of the twentieth century different philosophers came up with different ideas on this theme. Miguel de Unanamo who was a Spanish writer majorly did not support the idea of rationalism and disliked peoples nature through believe in one’s belief. Miguel brought this ideologies together in his literacy and helped people understand better the main ideas of existentialism. (Sartre, page 23).
Ortega a Spanish writer in 1914 supported Sartre works and supported the theme that the human nature could be changed. Human nature was mainly over the notion of making up charisma. Ortega proposed that though the human will was easily changed, if one would direct his free will towards reasonability then will would be made constant.
Martin who was a German writer in 1922 brought out the act that the human nature was mental. Gabriel marcel a French writer in 1925 joined the term of externalism which major religious beliefs. Marcel implied that the presence of God to the human helped in controlling the human thinking patterns. It brought about willingness of one person grief for the sake of the other individuals. (Victor et al, page 13) This could be learnt by the way most soldiers had given up their lives for the sake of their country. The lesson learnt was that external influence from another person’s life was to help the human mind realise the need of the presence of an external supreme being. These points of view were later take by Sartre who made up his philosophical belief.
Concept through existentialism was developed and turn into known after the end of the 2nd world war.(Nigel et al, page 14) The most influential people during this time was Sartre and Albert through their major literacy works. The theme of ‘existence precedes essence’ by Sartre was greatly shaped by his past experiences as a resistance as a fighter. Since he was an atheist he claimed God did exist hence the term no essence and talked about the existence human free will. He explained t...
