From 1660 to 1815, Britain’s rapid rise to global geopolitical primacy, maritime hegemony, and evolution into the wealthiest nation globally marked the Industrial Revolution’s commencement. With an increased pool of laborers, an agrarian revolution, and social transformations, the West witnessed “a quantum leap” in its revolution; material wealth increased, child labor set in, and women joined the working class (Spielvogel “Western Civilization: A Brief History 443). The resulting population explosion, agrarian revolution, growth in cottage industries, and expanded foreign trade triggered better living conditions as workers earned high wages. The Industrial Revolution spread to the rest of Europe after 1815 due to a lack of skilled technical labor, a shift in investment industries from rudimentary to mechanized tools, and general European underdevelopment compared to Britain.
The Industrial Revolution upheavals of these eras (1790 – 1812), despite similar developments to Britain across the continent, disadvantaged most of Europe: the continent lagged in communication and transport systems (Engerman and O’Brien 459).
