Pocahontas
Born in 1595, Pocahontas was the daughter of the great Powhatan chief. The chief’s daughter was not only intelligent but also an extremely talented young lady. During the founding of Jamestown that took place in 1607, Pocahontas was aged ten years old and his father Powhatan ruled several client tribes in a region referred to as Tsenacomaca by the Powhatans which stands in the Chesapeake region area. Though very young, Pocahontas held a unique role out of merit because of her spirit and wit, which were unique to her, and that made her an outstanding character. As Camilla Townsend writes about Pocahontas qualities were unique more than we can envision “. . . She is visible only in the comments left by the white men who knew her and wrote down their impressions. What we glean comes from reading between the lines”. In favorite movies, Pocahontas is displayed in a different light than how she was in reality. Her story is brought out as a love legend while it ignores the greater picture of Pocahontas as a significant public and historical figure. Therefore, this paper analyzes the contributions of Pocahontas to the success of the US, especially Jamestown in Virginia.
Pocahontas Allowed Civilization
After the arrival of the first European settler in Jamestown, Virginia, Pocahontas’ entanglement with the Englishmen, Captain John Smith and John Rolfe, forever ingrained her into the American Colonial Legacy. The legacy brought civilization to not only America but also to the majority of the new world where they are believed to have brought contagious new technology, Christianity, their language, and more importantly education to the colonies that they managed to rule (Bell 3). During their earlier attempts to penetrate America, many of the original colonist British settlers were attacked and killed upon making entry into America. However, this changed a bit, and the settlers found peace as well as hospitality in Jamestown, Virginia, which was the first English settlement in the Americas. The turn of events can be attributed Pocahontas efforts to protect the colonizers after their sailing ships arrived in the Chesapeake Bay as they planned to set up a colony in Virginia with Jamestown as their first settlement.
