A court is organized in either a unified or a fragmented court system. The New York state court system located in the United States and is structured in a unified court system. The state court begins handling matters at the trial courts which are at the lowest level in the court's order. The trial courts comprise of the criminal courts which handle misdemeanours, a preliminary hearing for felonies, and conduct arraignments. The trial courts also handle civil matters such as lawsuits for damages claim for up to $ 25 000 and small claims for $5 000, and even issues involving landlords and their tenants. Other trial courts handling civil cases, arraigning defendants for felonies and settling disputes for up to $15 000 but located outside of New York city are the District Courts, City Courts, Town and Village Justice Courts.
The Supreme Court falls under trial courts that operate in and outside of New York. Matters that are outside the jurisdiction of lower courts such as the criminal prosecution of felonies, annulment, divorce, separation, and civil affairs involving a higher amount are heard here.
