Effects of Domestic Violence and Social Violence on Moral Development in Children
Domestic violence which occurs in form of financial restraint, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse or even an attempt to have complete control over a person who is 16years and above, has been a common occurrence in many families. This has far-reaching effects on the victims particularly the children who either suffer directly or indirectly through witnessing the same. Moreover, social violence such as war, riots, labor strikes affect kids either through direct witnessing or in media. All these have harmful effects on the behavioral development in children.
Poor Relationship Abilities
When children are exposed to violence of whatever kind, they are likely to develop poor relationships with other people. Most of them will seem to be aloof at most times with introverted lifestyles. These children will be seen to be less concerned with other children’s emotional expressions and are less sympathetic. The processing of social information is also distorted with limited interpersonal sensitivity. At times, such kids withdraw themselves from their peers and lead solitary, reserved lives due to diminished self-esteem or depressed cases (Mullender 20).
Poor Problem Solving Skills
Children who have been witnessing violence in their families or within their social setting are at the risk of being poor in solving problems. They will in most of the occasions opt to use violence rather than amicable means in doing this. This is because children emulate the frequently observed problem solving formula witnessed from parents. Boys acquire negative mentorship from their brutal fathers while girls imitate their rough mothers (Mullender, 20; Edleson 840). In depressed situations, some will engage in the worst approaches to problem solving such as injuring self by cutting or even taking overdoses of drugs when things become very tough.
Antisocial Behaviors
Children who are either direct or indirect victims develop socially detestable conducts such as theft, drug addiction, sexual immorality (Sampson et al., 223) and frequent fighting. Most children fight for self- defense as this has been a picture painted in his/her mind. Others may turn to sexual exploitation of their opposite gender as this seems to be less of an evil. The stressed up or depressed children resort to alcoholism and drug addiction to mask reality and the perturbing experiences which are seen as unbearable (Edleson 839).
Violence
There is trend that has been observed whereby victimized kids grow up to become brutal in their adult lives as this is not a new thing to them (Sampson et al. 224). They have been convinced that for one to survive/ succeed in life, it is paramount to be vehement. These have also been accustomed to exploitation of others and will always take advantage of their peers when an opportunity presents. When it is necessary to share, they will secure everything, even what is not important for them. A selfish attitude is the result.
