Participants
Academic performance of individuals influenced by family type was examined in a sample of 73 families. The data obtained was then compared to the academic performance of the selected subjects. The sample families chosen were either married, divorced, separated or never married.
Design
The participants were assigned to four vignettes to determine their frequency based on their family description and extra vignette based on their GPA. Such descriptions used are gender, ethnicity, age, and parent style. In the GPA vignette, 41 participants were categorized in the 3.51 to 4.0 category, 17 participants classified in the 3.01 to 3.50category, 14 participants in the 2.01 to 2.50 category while only one participant was classified under GPA category of 2.01 to 2.50. Ethnicity description resulted in five categories that were white, Hispanic, Asian/Asian-America, Black/African-American, or Multiracial whose frequencies were 64, 2, 3, 3, and 3 respectively.
The gender description resulted in two categories of either male or female where the frequency of participants was 7 and 66 respectively. Under the parent style description, three categories arose that include divorce (21 participants), married (44 participants), and never married or the separated (8 participants). Under the age description, the family participants were categorized by the age of 18 to 53 years.
