The bible is normally referred to as a library of books that were written by different human authors who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. This then makes the bible a word of God (Bauckham, 2015, p.10). While the above is the case, it significant to note that there are different literally forms that have been used in writing the different books of the bible (Edwards, 2015, p.50). As such, the biblical texts have made use of diverse stylistic devices to communicate the message to its targeted audience. In the gospel of John, several metaphors have been used. This paper examines the “I am” metaphors used in the book of John and their contribution to understanding Jesus in the gospel as well as their implication on the modern day Christian community. The paper argues that these metaphors communicate the divine nature and the authoritative position of Jesus Christ, his reliability, and power over nature and death.[Bauckham, Richard. Gospel of Glory: Major Themes in Johannine Theology. Baker Academic, 2015.] [Edwards, Ruth B. Discovering John: content, interpretation, reception. Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, 2015.]
