Artwork: The Kiss
The kiss painting is a 1907-1908 artwork by Gustav, an Austrian symbolist painter as his artistic response to the Byzantine mosaics. In the painting, he portrays a couple with their bodies entwined while embracing each other. Just as the paint’s title suggests, the man is on display kissing the woman on the cheek with his hands cradling her face. Gustav brings out the style of Art Nouveau and organic forms of earlier arts and crafts movements visible as he uses geometric patterns on the man’s robe and floral patterns on the woman’s dress in recognition of the international trend in decorative and fine arts at the time.
