Impact of Technology on the Cognitive ability of College Students
Cognitive abilities refer to brain-based skills that are needed by an individual to carry out any task from the simplest to the most complex. Cognitive abilities have more to do with the mechanisms of how we learn, remember, problem-solve and pay attention rather than with any actual knowledge. These abilities are supported by specific neuronal networks, for instance memory skills rely mainly on parts of the temporal lobes and parts of the frontal lobes (Chockalingam et al., 2012). Several factors have been shown to influence cognitive abilities in students, in this paper we will discuss how information technology specifically affects the cognitive abilities of college students. In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in use of computers in American colleges and universities due to the promise of information technology which has a considerable amount of logical appeal. When used appropriately and in collaboration with other pedagogical approaches, technology is supposed to enhance student learning productivity. It does this by enriching synchronous classroom activities and providing students with self-paced and asynchronous learning opportunities that enable students to learn more than they would otherwise and at costs that are ultimately below that of a traditional classroom-based instruction (Christopher et al., 2000)
Research conducted on how digital technology affects students’ cognitive abilities indicated that screen technology may offer selective cognitive benefits. However, there was mounting evidence in Cognitive neuro science literature that indicated digital technology is restructuring the way students read and think and not necessarily for the better. Emerging research regarding intensive use of digital devices suggests something more closely resembling a Faustian quandary whereby certain cognitive skills are gained while other deep-thinking capabilities deteriorate as a result of alterations in the neural circuitry of millennial brains (Golden et al.,2016).
