Mean Kinship Table Biological & Biomedical Sciences Statistics Project (Statistics Project Sample)
Ballou et al. introduced us to kinship tables in section 11 this week. You can
think of the Mean Kinship Table as the ultimate online dating profile. But
instead of exaggerated personality traits and posed pictures from 5 years ago,
all that’s on display are good old genetics. That’s right, stripped down to their
A,C,T, and Gs.
For this exercise:
1. Create a mean kinship table for the species you selected for your final
report.
2. Calculate each individual’s genome uniqueness value and kinship
coefficients for all possible pairings.
3. Then make recommendations for every animal in the captive program you
are creating for your final project (this can be done in a table format).
4. Write a short 1-page persuasive letter to other zoos that may have
individuals and let them know why they need to breed their individuals with
others outside of their organization. Be sure to include justifications based
on your calculations.
