The goal of the airport operations management is to provide the airport with a successful operations management and safety management. A major responsibility of this department is to focus on how the airport works as an operational entity and how to improve the airport to its maximum possible efficiency. It is necessary that the airport maintain highest possible standards of safety for both passengers and staff, which is the responsibility of the operations management department.
About 80 percent staff of airport work in different units of the operations management department. The units within the department include security, development, operation, logistics, customer care, HR, Infrastructure, legal administration, public relations, ground handling, and safety management. It is the duty of the operation management department to attend to the day-to-day running of the airport, as well as short-term and long-term operations at the airport. The department also manages the maintenance of runways and space allocations for various airline companies using the airport. It is the responsibility of the operation management team to implement safety management system and train staff of the fire unit. The department also works with the civil authority association. It also manages the terminal building and the facilities provided by airport to the passengers. It manages all duty free shops, hotels, cafés, and shops in the airport. The key task and duty of operation management department is security of the airport. The department has a team of engineers and security experts who coordinate and management security activities. It also provides leadership to airlines, handling agents, retailers, and cargo handlers. There are also external stakeholders who work with the operation management to manage the airport. It is the responsibility of the operation management to coordinate and promote cohesion of the whole team of the department. In addition, the department supervises all the emergency responses at the airport, such as bomb threats, ill passengers, and emergency landing of the airplanes.
This demonstrates the operation management department coordinates or performs everything related to the airport operations. The department is a big team that has many employees working together. All these employees directly or indirectly depend on each other on their work, working as a team to accomplish common tasks related to management of the airport’s operations.

An airport operation director is typically responsible for all the daily operations of the airport. All departments of airport are under his or her supervision. The airport operation director directly coordinates and reviews all aircrafts operations, maintenance of the aircrafts, and creating community relations. The director also oversees the finance matters of the airport. Some airport operation directors are also responsible for running airport's FBOs under a separate agreement with the airport owning jurisdiction. Irrespective of specific duties airport operation directors may have each day, their main responsibility is to operate a safe and efficient airport. They have to coordinate with all departments at the same time to make the airport safe and efficient for all the passengers. The overall quality of the national airspace system is dependent on this.
Airport operation directors report to and receive directions from the owner of the airport. However, they exercise authority and autonomy when making majority of decisions related to running of the airport. Whenever some emergency occur, they are free to make and implement any decision without any delay. The directors are also responsible for interpreting the functions and activities of the airport to the public.
Besides, public relation is also another important function of airport operations director. Airport management is a complex process of directing resources towards the accomplishment of the airport's goals. Every day, many people with different nationalities from across the world visit the airport. The consumers expect safety and efficient services and often experience some problems that need solutions efficiently and effectively. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the airport management to satisfy needs of all the passengers. Delays in the flights due to any reason, such as fog and rain, cause problems for the management at airport. The department needs to not only adjust delay and late flights, but also manage emergency landing of flights. There is also the issue of offering effective customer care services to passengers with different nationalities, cultures, and languages.
