Introduction
China state located in the southeast Asia region of the world. The country has a population of 1’382’323’332 people based 2018 Gapeframe report. Geopolitically the country is classified as developing. Based on the united nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, China has a Gapeframe score of 3.5(Trading Economics, n.d). According to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals plans, the country is required to base its plans towards making the world a better place to live by focusing on four major dimensions, which are planet, society, economy, and governance. The dimensions have a direct impact on the state's population, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), GDP- income per capita. Based on the GapFrame report 2018, despite the vastness of China, its population is too high for the state to sustain effectively(Trading Economics, n.d). The rising number of the countries population causes significant strain on the state's ability to effectively provide for its population in terms of economy, social, planet, and governance dimensions. Under the four SDGs dimensions GapFrame further subdivides them to come up with 24 issues that are used as performance indicators for every state.
China’s current GDP is expected to hit USD 14400 billion by the end of the year 2020(Trading Economics, n.d). This is despite the challenges that the country has faced following the disruption of global supply chains by the Covid-19 pandemic. China's GDP per capita has continuously grown from the year 1960. It currently stands at 8254.3 USD (Trading Economics, n.d). The country main industries comprise of mining, iron and steel, aluminum, coal, telecommunications and information technology, machinery, aircraft, textiles and apparel, petroleum, cement, chemical,  food processing, automobiles, fertilizers, rail cars and locomotives, ships, consumer products such as footwear, toys, and electronics, and armaments. This makes the country the largest exporter of finished goods and importer of raw materials across the globe.
Based on the GapFrame report on sustainable development 2018, China has a lot to do to provide its citizens and a world a better planet to live. The fact that the country has invested heavily in manufacturing coupled with the rising number of population China as a state performance on the planet dimension is at threat(Gapframe, 2020). It is evident that on the planet the country is performing well on biodiversity and clean water. Considering that the planet dimension has eight issues under it, the state should consider improving its performance index on the 6 other issues. Most especially waste management and oceans which have recorded the minimal scores.
Governance is another dimension that the GapFrame report revealed that the country is at threat. China’s journey towards achieving sustainable development will not be accomplished if issues highlighted in the governance dimension on Sustainable Development Goals 2030 are not addressed. In governance the country has done very well in public finance whee she achieved a score of 8.3. the other issues on governance are at threat as they fall below 4.9 scores. One particular area that the country needs to review and focus on is peace and cooperation(Gapframe, 2020). Having a score of 1.8 means that there is a lot that needs to be done to alleviate the country's governance in terms of cooperation and peace.
Society is an important component of every state. It is the key driver of the economy as it provides human capital to the state's economic activities(Gapframe, 2020). To achieve sustainable development, it is the role of the state to ensure that it provides amenities and programs that take care of their citizens. Based on the 2018 GapFrame report on China, a lot has to be done to stabilize the score. The country scored 6.2 out of the overall score of 10.0. under this dimension, six issues are addressed; education, health, equal opportunities, living conditions, social integration, and quality of life(Gapframe, 2020). The country is performing well on health, relatively well on education and living conditions, however, on social integration and provision of equal opportunities, the country should do a lot more. These issues if not addressed effectively will drag the social dimension pillar of the country behind.
Being the largest export and manufacturing economy, one would expect China to perform well on Sustainable Developments Goals on the economy. A GapFrame score of 6.2 on the economic dimension is relatively not that bad. Five issues are critically evaluated to provide and insight into the country's performance on the economy(Gapframe, 2020). Of the five issues, innovation and sustainable consumption are the issues that need to be addressed. The two are a big threat to the country’s economy.
Compared to her counterparts in Southeast Asia, China is doing relatively well in achieving the 2030 Sustainable development Goals agenda(UNDP, n.d.). Being a member of the G-20, China has pushed the members of the cooperation to develop and implement a joint SDG action plan that will guide the G-20 countries towards achieving the agenda in time.
On October 12, 2016, china launched is a national action plan for sustainable development. The action plan serves as a guide that will guide the nation towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable development Goals agenda. Based on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release, China has a broad approach to “innovative, coordinated, green, open, and shared development.”. The comprehensive SDGs action plan heavily rely on lessons and experience the country went through while implementing the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
