CBA Washington state Name Institution Subject Date CBA Washington state Ukraine – Russian war: warfare and terrorism Introduction Global conflicts involve fatal disagreements and strive about an essential matter between two parts of the globe. These parts could be regions, countries, continents, and/or global organizations. These conflicts could lead to global wars if they haven't been amicably solved, like the Ukraine- Russia conflict, which has brought about a battle between the two countries. The Ukraine – Russia war involves more than two forces, especially on the side of Russia, which is supported by other forces that are pro-Russia. The war dates back to February 2014 after, Ukraine's revolution of Dignity, and then aimed at the welfare of Donbas and Crimea, which are known to be part of Ukraine's territory. Since then, the conflict has involved a capture of Crimea by Russia and a progressive war in Donbas between the Ukrainian forces and diverse separate fighters backed up by Russia. This paper examines the war between Ukraine and Russia and aims to find some of the reasons behind the existence of the war and the form of conflict involved (Raik & Kristi, 2019). Background information This war started in the eastern part of Ukraine around eight years ago, in 2014, when Russia seized Ukraine's Crimea. This was after a protest in Ukraine against the then Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych's rejection of the EU greater economic deal, after which he fled the country. Russia defended its action of capturing Crimea, stating that it was defending its citizens in Crimea and the entire southeastern region of Ukraine. It also went ahead and captured Peninsula shortly after the Crimea residents voted in favor of joining the Russian Federation through a referendum. This led to more divisions in Ukraine as regions such as Luhansk and Donetsk conducted a referendum, declaring themselves independent from Ukraine (Malyarenko & Tatyana et al., 2018). The countries in the region, which are Germany, France, Ukraine, and Russia, tried to hold peaceful negotiations in 2015, which would include a provision for a cease-fire, complete Ukrainian control over the conflicted areas, and withdrawal of all heavy weaponry by both parties. This bid was unsuccessful and bore no fruit, and the conflict increased. In the April of 2016, an announcement to deploy battalions to Eastern Europe by NATO was made, leading to a rotation of troops through Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, and Latvia. This was aimed at hindering any further Russian aggression in Europe. The United States added two of its Army tank brigades to Poland in September 2017 in a bid to support NATO in the regions. At the start of 2018, diverse sanctions were imposed on more than twenty people, including Russian officials and companies that are pro-eastern Ukraine conflict, by the U.S government (Raik & Kristi, 2019). In October 2018, several countries such as the U.S, Ukraine, and seven other NATO countries held a series of large-scale air exercises in the western part of Ukraine after Russia's annual military exercise in September 2018. This was after the U.S had agreed to sell anti-tank weapons to Ukraine since the conflict began. Russia has conducted Ukraine-targeted thousands of cyber-attacks and power attacks. More than 200,000 Ukrainians lost power in 2015, and Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, experienced a power loss in 2016 following several power attacks by Russia. The NotPetya cyber-attack, which was attributed to Russia, hit both the Ukrainian government and diverse businesses' computer systems, spreading the effect to computer systems across the world and causing billions of dollars in losses. Russia started a more intense military build-up on the Ukraine-Russia border in late 2021, expanding the conflict through a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on the 24th of February 2022 (Malyarenko & Tatyana et al., 2018). Causes /types (Economic, Political, Ideological, Ethnic, Religious, Territorial) The cause of this conflict is both political and territorial because Russia aimed at overrunning Ukraine and deposing its government, hence ending its desire to join NATO, a Western defensive alliance. After failing to seize the Ukrainian capital, Russia directed its ambition to the Ukrainian eastern and southern regions. The Russian government told its people that it aimed at demilitarizing and de-Nazifying Ukraine in order to protect its people from bullying by the Ukrainian government. The other aim was to ensure Ukraine attained a neutral status, as Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov termed it, freeing Ukraine from oppression (Mykhnenko & Vlad 2020). Forms of conflict in the war (Conventional, Guerilla, Civil, Insurgency, Terrorism) The conflict has been more of terrorism than any other form involving cyberwarfare incidences, political strains, and naval incidences. An alarm was also raised by some Ukrainian fighters against Russian assault during the war. The soldiers from Ukraine's Azov battalion claim that a cloud of smoke that led to some of their members experiencing breathing challenges were left after a Russian drone flew over them. This points to the possibility of a poison or chemical attack by the Russian government against Ukrainians, which amount to extreme terrorism (Hoffman & Frank 2018). Conclusion The Ukraine-Russia war has been active for eight years now but has heightened towards the end of the year 2021. It has involved vital war actions such as cyber-attacks that affect the entire globe, power attacks, and annexing...
