Urban politics in United States has brought the understanding of political affairs, economic trends and transformation of its cities over a long period of time. Politics led to the growth of the federal government, new powerful identities in urban politics emerged and involvement of neighborhood based movement for the aim of restructuring the economic sector have characterized the major American cities since world war two.
America has witnessed mass migration as compared to many developed states in the world. In particular, African Americans from the south and Latinos from Mexico migrated to America and became the new residents who occupied there in major cities in search for better and quality life (Stoker, 2015). The effects of these immigrants were the introduction of new forms of neighborhood politics and promoted the emergency of rebellions against liberalism. The realization of racism and discrimination over skin color became rampant in United States. The African Americans who inhabited areas like Philadelphia then went further to form trade unions with the help of WEB Du Bois who was a great historian and sociologist to advocate for African American rights.
After world war two, the relationship between the federal government of American and the American cities was marked. It’s clear that before the world war two the federal government played a minimal role in developing the state but afterwards it got much involved in governance. It subsidized the migration of white families, tax dollars to the suburban sites and industries (Wolman, & Goldsmith, 2012). It further centralized the poor and those of different color in the urban core. This grouping enhanced the segmentation of metropolitan space bringing dilemmas for cities within America. This among other strategies led to innovations and changes in the American cities by appointing and electing new generation politicians who spearheaded liberal reforms and growth of economy.
Neighborhood change
United States went further to bring a lot of transformations to neighbors in terms of development, change of economy and social effects to other states. The African Americans living in United States in America gained a lot of knowledge through civic education (Grigsby, 2011). They become more civilized example the emergency of personalities like Booker T Washington, Max Weber and WEB Du Bois who engaged themselves in advocating for the rights of the blacks.
Before the world war two, many African countries were under colonization and this encouraged slave trade. Africans were transported to western countries purposely to provide cheap and reliable labor to their companies. This initiated interaction between the two parties and finally exchange of cultural and behaviors. Change was noted in terms of economy because American states received raw materials from neighbors with cheap labor and consequently improved the economic states of the cities like Philadelphia that was inhabited by the Negros.
The issue of gentrification is also experienced. Gentrification is not a bad habit because it entails the displacement of the original people in a city and being occupied by new immigrants who are of good economic state and improving the area. The purpose if doing gentrification is to upgrade a state and absorbing the ancient inhabitants into the improved system (Skogan, 2015). Gentrification is a controversial thing but many neighbor states have experienced it and consequently having a new look of cities in terms of developments and living standards. America has invested a lot of its wealth into new sectors in different states around the world. This is done through industries, technology and business enterprises all over the world. This has led to changes of the neighbor in terms of culture and even social aspects. The political systems has also changed tremendously in neighbors because of existence of financial support between develop states and developing states.
Transnational lives
It is proved that a growing number of individuals partly in one state and partly in another. There are a number of instances that you find a person is entitled to leave and operate in more than one state. For instance majority of people own two identity cards confirming that he or she is a citizen of the two countries legally. This is done because of occupational reasons, by will or security matters or by birth.
Transnational live is common in the recent live because of the fact that all states are termed one hence globalization. A lot of businesses are operating in different countries but the management is central (Schiller, Basch ,& Blanc, 2013). A lot of students are operating from one state to another for the purpose of study and research while teachers, scientists, politicians, managers and doctors are flying from one state to another to perform duties. This means that many people are investing a lot not only within the boundaries but only outside the borders of states.
During holiday leaves, after wedding and part things, many people tend to seek extra leisure by travelling to neighbor states and far states to test the pleasure out the boundaries. Through this a lot of interactions are made between people of different diversities.
It is also factual to say that the level of technology globally has encouraged information sharing among states. The existence of World Wide Web has become a major source of information sharing. This is made a success through internet websites whose aim is to do global advertisement. Social media websites are also becoming a trend to people today and hence living a transnational live.
Policies and national integration is a key factor showing that people live international lives. After the world war two international agencies were formulated to advocate for the right of people globally.
Letter justifying why the course of global cities is needed
Political systems of countries are different from one another. A country can never be self dependant in terms of raw materials, labor, technology and markets. All states are entitled to acquire a number of raw materials that are essential in the production of specific products that are basic to human beings. A country with these materials may require support from another country in terms of labor, finances, technology to be able to produce the expected products. After production, the potential market is not regionally but internationally. Existence of barriers and regulations from the government policies can be easily negotiated if there is a global understanding. The course of global cities will be a base of understanding different geographical status and through appreciation of different cities our economic status will improve. Politically, global cities course will help people of different diversities to understand the origin and lifestyle of his people. This will help fighting the issue of racial discrimination and nepotism among the people hence promoting and ethnical cultures and also provision of opportunities to work everywhere in the world.
