Hostede’s Cultural Dimensions in India
In comparison to other cultures in other countries, the Indian culture may be explored using the Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions as follows:
Power Distance
This dimension explores the reality about the inequality of individuals in various societies, and the cultural attitudes thereof. For the case of India, this dimension gives a score of 77, which points to the fact that the Indian culture is such that there is a particular structure to be followed both in the society as well as in organizations. In fact, this dimension is the highest of the four dimensions. Generally, this would be interpreted to mean that the topmost individual in the structure in Indian society and organizations is heavily relied upon to give some form of direction. It is also not uncommon to experience inequality of rights between the haves and the have-nots in India. Overall, a top-down mode of communication is accepted. The score is, therefore, generally indicative of a centralized form of real power.
Individualism
This dimension takes care of the extent of interdependence of various members of the society in different aspects. India’s rating on this parameter is 48, which is an average figure. This is an implication that India’s culture is such that it appreciates both individualism as well as collectivism. Whereas the former manifests itself in the country’s dominant Hindu religion, the latter character is seen in the decisions made while employing and appraising employees in organizations. In India, this is usually founded on the mutual relationships between the employee and their immediate supervisor, which is essentially a major determinant in collectivism.
Masculinity
This dimension illustrates the motivations behind the human nature to always want to emerge successful (masculinity) or being contented with their current status (feminine). A higher score on this dimension illustrates how admirable it is to the society for one to stand out from the crowd. The rating in India for this parameter is 56; pointing to the sheer fact that it is generally a masculine society. Vividly, this is expressed in the way the superrich flamboyantly show off their wealth in India.
Uncertainty Avoidance
This dimension deals with the inability of humans to foresee their future. It shows how fearful it is for the members of the society to think of their destinies. India scores 40 on this. This implies that India has a relatively lower ability to avoid uncertainty. The principle overall here is that no human is perfect. In India, it is not uncommon for the unexpected to be tolerated by the society as such is taken to mean a break away from the usual ways of doing things.
