Self help test 3: Please read the rules carefully and read the samples. Then write each of the sentences correctly. When you turn this in to your assignments, be sure that the test has the rules on it just like it is here. Thank you. Everyone should take this to avoid making the same errors repeatedly. PLEASE MAKE HARD COPIES OF THESE RULES AND USE THEM ON EVERY SENTENCE.
Rule1A. When a word, phrase, or dependent clause begin a sentence and come before the independent clause, a comma comes after them and before the independent clause.
Samples:
If the students are late, they will all have to stay after class.
Also, the boys beat the girls in the contest.
Finally, after the third try, I got my license.
Because he was late, Joe got detention.
Rule 1 B. When the phrases and dependent clauses come after the independent clause, NO comma is used.
Samples:
The students will have to stay after class if they are late.
The boys beat the girls in the contest also.
I got my license finally after the third try.
Joe got detention because he was late.
Please write these following sentences making corrections, so you have placed commas where they belong.
Part 1: How would you correctly punctuate these sentences?
1. Good writing often evolves into a motion picture because the writer communicated using imagery.
2 When selecting a book the reader does not know how a story will affect him.
3. Poetry can be interpreted in many different ways without any one way being wrong.
4. Without any one way being wrong poetry can be interpreted in many ways.
5. Nevertheless this sentence is more descriptive than the first one.
6. This sentence is more descriptive than the first one nevertheless.
7. When Mark won the car Mary was very excited knowing she could have it.
8. Mary was very excited knowing she would drive it when Mark won the car.
9. Following his birthday Joe will go into the army.
10. Joe will go into the army following his birthday.
RULE: 2 A comma comes before a conjunction IF THE CONJUNCTION JOINS TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES.

Mary was ill, so she missed the game.
The class with the best score wins, but each class still gets a party.
RULE 2 B: A comma DOES NOT COME BEFORE A CONJUNCTION IF THE CONJUNCTION JOINS ONLY WORDS, VERBS AND PREDICATES.

The class with the worse score loses but still get a party.
Part 2: How would you correctly punctuate these by either leaving out a comma or putting one in?
