William James Bosket was born in 9th day of December, 1962 he was an American citizen who was sentenced for murder. Whose many crimes committed while he was still a minor led to a change in New York state law so that juveniles would get tried as an adult for murder and would face the same penalties. He has been in either prison or penitentiaries and is serving a sentence of 82 years to life at
Woodbourne Correctional Facility (Eligon, 2008).
Willie Butch, his father, killed two people shortly after his son got conceived and sentenced to life in prison. His mother had no relationship with him, this left Bosket to face the world alone. Bosket had always been a violent child even in his early days, and he was proud of it. His father Butch was his role model, and he did not hide the fact that he wanted to be a killer. His first experience in a juvenile reform center was at the age of nine. However, he always ended up being released from prison going back home because at the time, as there was notion that someone his age would not commit a crime and thus posed no threat to the community.
On 19th March 1978, Bosket shot and killed a man on a train operating on the New York City Subway service when he attempted rob him off his property. Eight days after the occurrence, Bosket and another assailant in crime shot dead another man. In another train, he and his accomplice attempted a robbery and shot a New York City Transit employee and committed two other armed burglaries (Eligon, 2008).
Bosket was tried for the murders in New York City's family court. As the trial was ongoing, Bosket surprised his lawyer by pleading guilty to all three killings. He got sentenced to a maximum of five years in the Goshen Youth Facility. Even though prosecutors tried to get an extended sentence, five years was the best they could get under the law of the time.
The short length of Bosket's sentence triggered a massive public uproar. Governor Hugh Carey urged the State Assembly Minority Leader Perry Duryea, to have youngsters tried as adults for some crimes. Though, after reading a report on Bosket's sentence, she called the state legislature into special session to pass the Juvenile Offender Act (Murderpedia n.d.).Under this act, an adult court would hear and try the cases of children who were beyond thirteen years old. If these children had committed a crime such as murder, they could receive the same punishments as grown citizens. New York led in legislating a law of this nature; all of the other states have since followed suit.
He runs away from the youth facility a year into his sentence for the murders. He got caught, tried as an adult for the escape and sentenced to four years in the state's prison. He later was returned to the Youth Division in the year 1979 and got released in the year 1983. After days, he was arrested when a man living in his apartment claimed He had robbed and assaulted him. He physically violated several court officers while awaiting trial on that crime He judge hearing the case found him guilty of attempted physical attack. Bosket was to serve seven years of imprisonment.
At this point, his 1975 escape came back to haunt him. During the time of prosecution Bosket, had just turned sixteen, this meant that he was now an adult and could serve a jail term. In New York, escaping from a correctional facility is an offense (Murderpedia n.d.). If the court Had sentenced Bosket for assaulting the court officers, he would have served imprisonment for his third time as a convicted criminal. This was under the New York's characteristic offender law; as he was already facing an spontaneous sentence of twenty-five years to life. However, he was not found guilty.
Bosket was convinced that he could die in jail. He vented his anger a lot, taking his wrath out on the prison guards thus getting into frequent disputes. He was arrested for one of these outbursts and charged with assault and burning, and sentenced to twenty-five year to life. In the year 1989, he was sentenced to an additional twenty-five year to life sentence for stabbing a guard. After the 1988 assault, He was transferred to Woodbourne Correctional Facility, where in April 1989 he drew a third twenty five-years-to-life sentence for attacking a guard after he attacked him using a chain. All three sentences were consecutive (Butterfield 1989).
Since the 1988 assault, Bosket has been housed at Woodbourne in solitary imprisonment. Although Woodbourne is normally a medium-security prison, Bosket is housed in a specially-built Plexiglas-lined cell that has four video cameras recording his every action all the time. Due to a history of ingesting objects, his cell has been stripped of almost everything that he would use to harm inmates or even the guards not including the prison bed and toilet. The guards were restricted from having any conversation with him. He is only let out of his cell for one hour a day and bound with a tow chain. He was allowed to see visitors, and they could only speak to him from his prison cell. He was then of released on 16th September 2062, when he would be one hundred years old. This means that there is almost no chance he will ever be a free man again and will die in jail (Murderpedia n.d.).
