Introduction
Prior to the 17 century, the Chesapeake economy was dominated by tobacco especially in the two regions that included Maryland and Virginia. According to Norton, Sheriff, Katzman, Blightand Chudacoff (2007), development of urban centers was slow as peoplehad their own plantations of the tobacco crop and shipped them to England. The good yield of the produce was as a result of fertile soil from the riverbanks which also provided an easy way for transportation. The New England composed of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The Chesapeake and New England shared some similarities and differences which were conspicuous in their motivation for settlement, religious practices, and labor among others. By the year 1700, England moved a significant portion of slaves to Chesapeake to increase the tobacco productivity and eliminate small-scale farming in the area(Norton et al., 2007). As such, New England was characterized by small-scale farming, fishing and carpentry while Maryland and Virginia werepredominantly involved in large-scale farming. This essay seeks to provide insight into the history and development of Chesapeake and New England during the mid-18th century. Essentially, the subsequent parts of the paper will analyze the similarities and differences between the developments of these two colonial regions while also explaining how the variances between these two regions affected their overall development.
