British Columbia is one of the provinces of Canada located in the western part of Canada (Ostry et al., 2010). The province has a large area and is found between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The province is known to be that fifth largest in Canada with its capital at Victoria. The province has a number of large cities. Vancouver is the largest city in the province and is also considered the third largest city in Canada. The population in British Columbia is approximated at 4 million persons (Ostry et al., 2010). This paper speculates on the future of British Columbia as a region of Canada.
British Columbia is a province having a huge geographical, politically and economic potential (Ostry et al., 2010). In 25 years from now, the region is likely to be considered a core region due to its diverse economy serving a number of service-producing industries. The region will continue to benefit from the service-producing industries that currently form the largest portion of the region’s gross domestic product. The region will continue receiving benefits of the two transcontinental railways that make their terminal point in the province. The twenty-seven passenger terminals together with the key marine cargo will continue boosting the economy with revenue from imports and exports.
Having about 364,764 square metres of its land used for agricultural production, the region is likely to expand its agricultural activities in the Okanagan and Fraser valleys especially due to the favorable weather in the region (Ostry et al., 2010; Cashore, 2008). The future of the province economy will also be depended on tourism among other recreational activities. Other industries that will continue boosting the economy of British Columbia in the future are mining, farming, and logging activities. The housing market in the region is also likely to expand 25 years from now due to high per capita income of the residents, which has been reported to be above average.
Another reason that would make British Columbia a core region in future is the fact that it is the only province bordering the Pacific Ocean. Being close to the Pacific Ocean makes British Columbia a region with spectacular scenery that forms the backdrop in the ecotourism industry (Ostry et al., 2010). The entire province is made up of mountainous regions. The province is considered a section of the Pacific Northwest region just like other states in America like Alaska, Montana, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
The climate of British Columbia is another factor that would make the region a core region. The region is known for short winters especially in the coastal southern region. The climate can be described as a mild, rainy oceanic climate (Ostry et al., 2010). Some parts of the province experience the warm-summer Mediterranean climate as a result of the Kuroshio Current and the North Pacific current (Cashore, 2008). The climate of the interior part of the province could be considered semiarid having the central locations with annual precipitation below 250 mm. The temperature in the region is mild up to 12 degrees Celsius.
