Euthanasia
Even though euthanasia has been present for a relatively long time, the human race is still at crossroads and people are plagued by the incessant question, “Should euthanasia be supported or discouraged?”
Technical Aspect
The term euthanasia, which is the intentional acceleration of a suffering or terminal patient’s death, actually originated from Greece with the meaning of good death. However, since its beginning, this practice has been a controversial topic with divided opinions on its legalization. Euthanasia comprises of several categories, and these include: passive euthanasia that involves keeping treatment from the patient which can be voluntary or involuntary, active euthanasia, in which a lethal substance is used on the sufferer, and physician aided euthanasia, where a patient or third party administers lethal medication prescribed by the doctorCITATION Sur12 \l 1033 (Math & Santosh, 2012). The request for a premature termination of life has inevitably contributed to the argument concerning the role of such practices in modern health care. This controversial debate is spread across comprehensive and flexible features like human rights as well as religious, legal, spiritual, ethical, cultural, economic and social aspects of the civilized community. For instance, medical assistance in dying (MAID), a law including both euthanasia and assisted suicide under certain conditions, was legalized in Canada in 2016CITATION Sim17 \l 1033 (Simon, et al., 2017). Furthermore, in the Netherlands, physicians with the intentions of assisting patients with suicide are able to administer the lethal medication in some casesCITATION Gro00 \l 1033 (Groenewoud, et al., 2000). This is because the patients might be unable to take the medication by themselves or for reasons to do with the challenges of carrying out physician aided suicide. On the other hand, the abetment of suicide and the effort to killing oneself are equally criminal violations in India.
