Introduction
Architecture is a critical aspect of art that incorporates various elements ranging from aesthetics to practical features. Throughout history, various structures served various purposes, which greatly influenced their architectural designs. Notably, these structures did not only house their owners, but also expressed the existing energy context, sophistication, and alluring aspects that existed during their constructions. Most monumental buildings in the pre-industrial revolutions such as old cathedrals, castles, and market places expressed the culture in which the architecture stood. Most of these ancient buildings showed sophisticated architectural designs that served both practical and aesthetic purposes. Every century marked the appearance of different styles and forms of architecture depending on the energy constraints available during such periods. Most buildings constructed before the 1900s mostly used wood and earth mounds due to lack of iron technology that revolutionized architecture in the western countries. The main forms of energy before the iron era mainly included firewood and food for both humans and animals. Animals such as horses, oxen, and donkeys served as the main source of mechanical power for various activities. Notably, these forms of energy greatly influence the architectural designs of various structures during the period.
