Question 3
Identify the type of bullying identified in this case and how to deal with it.
Bullying at the place of work is repeated actions which are unreasonable by individuals or a group and are directed towards a group of employees. (Henderson 2011, p42). The main intention usually is to undermine, degrade humiliate or intimidate or which create a risk to health or safety of the employees. It also involves misuse or abuse of power. This behavior creates a feeling of injustice and undermines an individual’s right to self-esteem of work (SHARP-Program 2011, p1). Some form of bullying experiences at the place of work include; unjustified criticism, exclusion or social isolation, unfair treatment, micro-managing, preventing individual progression by intentionally blocking promotions, being given work with unrealistic deadlines, unwelcome sexual advances and many others (BJMP 2009(1)23-26).
From our case study, we see a number bullying subjected towards the employees of Oz Industries. Jake Stern descries Steve Lambert as a tyrant. He advises Amy Levitt to leave the job before the man breaks her. He further warns Amy that one’s Steve realizes that the company no longer needs her, she will be thrown out. This shows that Steve is unreasonable and only cares about the company. This shows that Amy does not have a job security at Oz Industries. As Amy, I would look for opportunities in other companies as I diligently work at Oz Industries without compromising the current responsibilities. Amy says she is under financial constraints and thus it’s difficult to leave the job impromptu.
Jo Santini was victim of bullying by Steve. When ordered to get chicken salad for lunch, steak sandwich was delivered. Steve shouted at Jo without getting to know why there was mistake and throws the steak sandwich at her. Moreover, he did that in front of the other employees. We see a number a bullying scenario here. There is unjustified criticism, shouted at and humiliated in front of workmates and physical abuse. I as Jo, if there is higher authority within the company, I would follow the chain of command to report the incidence. But from the case study, the owner of Oz Industries seems to be Job. I would therefore seek advice from legal authority on how to handle such a situation especially the physical assault. I would however be careful because the job security at Oz Industries is not guaranteed.
In conclusion, there should be zero tolerance to bullying in work places. Effects these practice many lead to psychological and physiological harm (Broome and William-Evans, 2011). It also affects the performance of work by employees due to fear instilled by the bullies. Strict laws have been put in place to curb this vice and heavily punish the perpetrator. (Heenan,2009)
