Implementation and application of building information modeling (BIM) have offered enormous advantages. Despite these massive benefits, there has not been an extensive study and analysis in relation to the influences BIM can have in sustainable design and engineering undertakings. The resulting work inclines towards evaluating the present trends in BIM application regarding the concept of architecture, engineering alongside the construction sector. The (AEC) industry and its contribution toward sustainable design and construction are key. A general overview of varied BIM package and several green building evaluating systems got depicted in the review. Further, Autodesk contribution to sustainability, green building assessment, prospects in green building evaluation, and the liaison between sustainability and BIM software for analyzing the environment got addressed in this review. Conclusions got affirmed by obtaining data through assessment of archival data. The information obtained is analyzed purposively to gain a deeper insight into the AEC perception of the application of BIM and sustainability in design and construction. Presently, vast stakeholders in AEC industry are applying BIM in various ways attributed to its potential capacity to offer collective and disseminated processes undertakings, which assist seventeen aspects of project delivery. Though a large number related to AEC industry recognizes that sustainable processes in design and construction rehearse are critical in their institution edifice, which still partake to the misconception that in most cases do not recognize the fundamental use of BIM. Majority believes that project organization and conception holds a central role in BIM application. Additionally, as clients and stakeholders increase their awareness of the probable positive impacts provided by processes related to BIM, the engineering and architecture industry will initiate the use of BIM frequently to depict a typical process. As a result of the relatively high cost associated with purchasing product keys for activating BIM software, various firms associated with the engineering and architecture industry perceives it as an expensive model. Advancing to BIM applications are far beyond a technological change. BIM if used effectively, can convey great business paybacks, which necessitate keen staffing, planning, training, and implementation.

In the past years, information technology (IT) has advanced and revolutionized production and design in varied fields. Music, videos, machinery and transport sectors have been substantial been affected. Design in the manufacturing industry gets boosted by the development of design software. Through the software, analysis of physical and operating characteristics is possible; further, the software aid in the determination of fabrication requirements. Digital prototypes have made manufacturing more efficient and cost effective (Boeykens, 2011, p.11). Similarly, engineers and architects are adopting and applying such tools I design of buildings. Conventional design approaches previously used in the construction industry had limitations. The emerging tool aims at delivering a range of characteristics which are far beyond the ordinary design tool. These tools provide information on varied types. As building growth interrelates with environmental considerations and the high cost of energy, a field intermingled within building design has erupted sustainable design- the design, construction, and operating structures in a way that environmental impacts get minimized. Despite the reputation behind BIM as a versatile tool, challenges with interoperability linger to each and everyone applying the model in design (Clevenger et al. 2010, p.3). On project delivery, previous work done relating to this topic depict the intervention that best suites Integrated Project Delivery -Design-Build and is the best approach to apply BIM as sustainability. BIM is an emerging trend, and an increase in some AEC professionals comprehending the future reimbursements offered by BIM model, its application will turn to be a critical tool for sustained construction and design (Borgoni, Tritto, & de Bartolo, 2013, p.2070).

BIM has been advancing technology recently in the realm of the construction industry; thus, creating a foundation upon which the future in the virtually built environment will develop. Through BIM use in the construction industry, much has been reaped. Total project quality has increased; total project costs minimized, and, projects scheduled precisely (Azhar, 2011, p.245). Substantial research has been carried out to advance further the potential of BIM in construction and design. However, fewer studies and analysis have been conducted on the consequences BIM can impact on sustainable design, and thus, the presented work identifies the validity and capabilities of BIM in sustainable building design.
Understanding and utilizing the virtual world in design and construction of building offers means of simulating and building three dimension structure within a computer before construction of the actual building (Azhar, 2011, p.245). Through this, better and efficient design is achievable thus limiting misuse and waste of construction resources. Additionally, it maximizes energy usage. Minimal studies have been conducted regarding the utilization of BIM in aiding sustainable design (Pan, Zhu, Ji, Yang, & Wu, 2014, p.870). Thence, this work is presented in an effort to disclose the prevailing interactions between sustainable building design and building information modeling.

The study aims at affirming the current state of BIM operations and functions about sustainable design of buildings. Additional goals include:
Analyzing the present trends and imminent advancement that relate to BIM and sustainable undertakings among engineers and architects in the design industry.
To assess different ways through which BIM finds use as a tool for sustainable practices.
To analyze the use of BIM in analyzes of the performance of a building in completed project.
To verify the actual stage of the design process where BIM is speculated to aid the most in facilitating and enhancing sustainable design
To determine the challenges and potential problems with BIM software.
