Extremely loud and incredibly close is a non-fiction work written by Jonathan Safran. In "Extremely loud and incredibly close”. OsKar gets the conviction that his father, having died in the 9/11 attack, at the World Trade Center, let a certain final message for him which was hidden in an anonymous place in the city. Oskar, feeling a disconnection from his grieving mother and being driven by a determined mind which refuses to trust things that are not able to be observed, he begins to search the city of New York for the mysterious lock’s key that he happened to find in the closet of his father. Oskar methodically meets everyone in New York City by the name "black" in search of clues about the key. In his search for the key, Oscar meets Abbey black, William black, and his neighbor who lives upstairs. This paper will discuss the kind of influence that these three characters had on Oscar and the particular lessons that Oscar learnt from each of the Blacks that he met.
Abby is one of the blacks. She is a resident of New York living in a narrowed house. Her house used to be home to Edna St. Vincent Millay, a poet. Oscar remarks that Abby has "huge boobs" and is "beautiful" (5.13). It appears interesting since this comment comes from a nine-year old. When Abby confesses that she doesn’t know her father, Oskar believes that she is lying. Ironically, much as he thinks she is lying, she becomes part of the answer to Oskar’s mystery. It turns out that the husband of Abby has the answer to where Oskar could the key to his father’s safe box.
William black is Abby’s husband. The relationship between William and his father was not all that good, a fact that makes Oskar to feel appreciative of his late father. William quotes "I’d trade this key for that father" (15.95). This is a tragic book and apparently no one will be able to solve the mystery that pervades the book and the storyline therein, and neither of the two will be able to bring back their dads to life. Oskar learns that William Abby is a very helpful person, and one that is easily sociable.
A.R Black is the neighbor, an elderly man that lives in the same building with Oskar and significantly helps Oskar to find the mysterious key to the lock. A.R Black is over 100 years old. There are multiple people that Oskar meets with the name Black. A.R Black lives in a very cool and elegant apartment, being filled with seashells, a Japan Samurai sword, and dolls. Having lived during the entire 21st century, he is ancient and most of the things he says has to end with an exclamation mar...
