Indigenous Film: Cultural Heritage and Identity
My final proposal intends to draw the thematic resemblance between Sherman Alexie’s Smoke Signal and Hands of History, directed by Loretta Todd. Most significantly, cultural identity and heritage are central themes in both films. Indigenous characters used in the plot Smoke Signal are Canadians acting to depict their Indian culture. There are several points of flashback in the movie to illustrate transitions in time. When Joseph rescued Thomas from getting burnt, Thomas adores Joseph as a hero while Victor – Joseph’s son, despises him because of his nature as an alcoholic, violent, and abandoning father. Most of the time, Victor and Thomas argued about their cultural identities until the demise of Joseph when they both set out on a journey to collect the ashes of Joseph in Phoenix. The journey unravels many truths about Victor forcing Thomas into teaching his counterpart about individual acceptance.
Todd’s case, on the other hand, illustrates the case of four aboriginal artists. One of them, Jane Ash, deals in collage and printmaking in the U.S., Germany, and Canada. Cardinal-Schubert deals in mixed-media and an active participant in the struggle against colonialism.
