Grandchildren and grandparent interaction result into the exchange of virtues, love, wisdom and responsibility. During the cordial relationship, grandparents get the opportunity to pass important virtues and knowledge to the grandchildren. Through fun, family stories and songs, grandparents actively pass happy memories down the family lineage. Furthermore, the time spent together enriches the growing experiences of the grandchildren, and also helps to bridge the intergenerational gap. To the grandparents, grandchildren represent the future. In her article, ‘protective role of grandparents’, Rita outlines that grandparents cushion grandchildren from their parents’ inconsistent responses to the children’s needs (Rita 23). She furthers affirms that many parents are so engaged in career that they lack quality time to interact with their children. In such cases, grandparents provide secondary family attachment to the children. From such attachment, the children gain emotional security, love and closeness. It is worth noting that many grandchildren have also learnt chores such a cooking, sewing, knitting and housekeeping from their grandparents. This was the case in my family as my father and mother always stayed away for work. My grandmother taught me dish washing, mopping and cooking. Unlike my parents, my grandparents were always gentle and calm when teaching me vital life lessons.
