What was the impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union on Sino-US relations?
The collapse of the Soviet Union provided an opportunity to strengthen Sino-US relations. Even before the Soviet Union collapsed, the Sino-Soviet relation had soured, and China had opened the door to the United States. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, China started more engagement with the US. China had reestablished diplomatic relations with the United States. As the Soviets collapsed, the Sino-US relationship thrived, and more trade and investments happened. However, particular incidents soured the relationship, such as the Tiananmen incident of 1989. Since the exit of the Soviets, China and US relationship and engagement grew, primarily via trade.
