Intimate Partner Abuse: Why the Abuser Abuses and Why the Victim Stays
Violence is a serious problem that plagues our nation. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, “violence is a public health problem that has a substantial impact on individuals, their families and communities and society.” (CDC, 2013) Furthermore, according to the FBI’s 2013 Crime Clock Statistics, a violent crime occurs once every 27.1 seconds. (FBI, 2013) Violence is defined as “behavior that causes injury to people or damage to property.” (Macionis, 2013) While most think of violence as physical assaults, murder, and rape; there are many ways in which violent crimes can be perpetrated. One specific type of violent crime that demonstrates the various facets of violence is domestic violence, or more specifically, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Also, the paper will dismiss the assumption that victims of IPV are weak for not leaving and define societal constraints that make it difficult to do so.
In order to understand the issues, it is important to understand the definition and different types of IPV. The Center for Disease Control (2013) defines IPV as “physical, sexual or psychological harm by a current or former partner or spouse.” There are five different forms of abuse, including; physical, sexual, mental/emotional, economical, and spiritual. (Otto, 2010) According to Anabell A. Otto, B.A. (2010), “Physical abuse is the most common form of domestic violence that comes to the attention of the police. Furthermore, Otto (2010) states, “nearly 33 million incidences of domestic violence occurred in 2002 with injuries resulting in over 9 million cases and over 32,000 deaths.” These statistics are overwhelming, but this is just the beginning.
