Impact of Social Media on the Criminal Justice System: Annotated Bibliography
Bliss, L. (2019). The protection from harassment act 1997: Failures by the criminal justice system in a social media age. The Journal of Criminal Law, 83(3), 217-228. https://doi.org/10.1177/0022018319829262
Bliss (2019), in the article “The protection from harassment act 1997: Failures by the criminal justice system in a social media age” examined how the Protection and Harassment Act of 1997 is applied to deal with abuses committed online. The article begins with an acknowledgment that increased use of the internet has, accordingly, caused an increase in online abuses, with police and other law enforcement units receiving more reports about crimes committed online. Thus, the article, in response to the increased frequency of reporting of online harassment as well as other crimes, examined the application of an, arguably, an outdated legal provision in dealing with evolved versions of abuse and crime. In this aspect, the article presents a clear fact that the legal system and criminal justice systems employed in many countries must evolve as fast as the offenses also evolve, lest they remain obsolete and unable to tackle emerging forms of crime. In this direction, the article will form a useful basis to discuss the effect of social media and internet usage on the evolution of crimes and how the criminal justice system should adapt to changing times. The article addressed the failure of the criminal justice system to apply for the Protection and Harassment Act of 1997 in a technological world, putting forward the needed changes that should be implemented by the steerers of the criminal justice system to ensure that the system can protect victims of cyber harassment, stalking, and other online crimes.
Intravia, J., Wolff, K. T., Paez, R., & Gibbs, B. R. (2017). Investigating the relationship between social media consumption and fear of crime: A partial analysis of mostly young adults. Computers in Human Behavior, 77, 158-168. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2017.08.047
Media-related theories have established that there is a relationship between the consumption of media and fear of crime, with previous studies mainly concerning themselves with traditional media like entertainment, television, and print media. However, Intravia et al. (2017) acknowledge that there is limited understanding of how social media usage relates to fear of crime, and therefore perform an analysis from data collected in multiple sites to confirm the relationships between the various types of media usage and people’s fear of crimes. The study also assesses whether the relationship between social media usage and fear of crime differs from traditional media forms. The findings of the research confirm that social media consumption is connected to an increased fear of crime, especially online harassment. Thus, by considering this study to study the impact of social media on criminal justice systems, it becomes possible to use empirical data to ascertain that the use of social media has a quantifiable effect on people’s fear of crime. This article is precisely vital in laying a foundation and justifying the thesis that there exists a relationship between social media usage and crime, and this determines how the criminal justice system responds to online abuses.
