How can federal and state policies drive alignment across public and private VBP efforts to reduce challenges associated with managing many different forms of value-based payment?
Hospitals seek to improve community health outcomes by controlling costs. However, accomplishing these goals requires hospitals to actively collaborate with payers to create effective value-based payment (VBP) models. Federal and state policies can drive alignment across public and private VBP efforts to reduce the challenges of managing different VBP forms. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) encouraged hospitals and health systems to create and implement new payment and delivery models through several platforms. For example, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) governs new payment and service delivery models (American Hospital Association, 2017). In such a way, the entity enables hospitals to decrease program expenditure without compromising care quality (American Hospital Association, 2017). These tests are critical for hospitals to implement standardized VBP models. Ultimately, the federal policy reduces the challenge of managing assorted VBP models in health settings.
