The Killing of Karen Silkwood
The author of the Killing of Karen Silkwood presents issues that are as relevant today as they were 40 years ago when the incident happened. Underpayment and poor remuneration of employees by big corporations have caused many problems in society today. In the case of Kerr-McGee Plutonium Company, workers were aware of the contaminations but unwilling to speak about the problem for fear of losing their livelihoods (Rashke 165). The author uses the tragic events leading to and following the death of Silkwood to show the dangers of not speaking out about critical issues in an organization. The heroic acts of Silkwood led to better regulation of the nuclear industry, thus saving a lot of lives. Her sacrifice for the greater good of the society should encourage employees to expose problems at the place of work.
