Nuclear power does not prove to be unworkable, but many nations recently are against the idea of its use due to reasons such as reduced public safety, the public's loss of trust and bad economies among other reasons. Scientists and diplomats debate over the issue of nuclear policy dates back to the period that saw the occurrence of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings in 1945. Most Americans believe that the United States atomic attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima were to terminate the World War II and save the lives of both American and Japanese populations. Conversely, a survey report produced in July 1946 showed that the US did not need to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Dwight Eisenhower a general and the then later president expressed that it was not necessary to drop the atomic attacks since the Japanese militants were ready to surrender. Besides, during that time dropping the bomb was not necessary since the employment of such a weapon would shock the world and furthermore it was not a mandatory move to save the American lives (Yagami 304). Admiral William Leahy also argued that the use of nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not necessary bearing in mind that the Japanese already tasted defeat and showed their readiness to surrender because of the sea blockade and successful bombings by conventional weapons. Killing the civilians without even carrying out negotiations was indeed a double crime.
Atomic bombings act as a threat to civilians because of nuclear wars that transpire from accidental or deliberate atomic attacks. Scientists created an estimate over a war that would occur between two countries that caused 100 Hiroshima-size explosions would result in massive losses of life mostly attributed to climatic effects. Atomic bombings cause nuclear accidents mainly due to overheating and melting of the nuclear plants. Countries incur enormous costs in acquiring and maintaining the nuclear power stations.
