DISCUSS VARIOUS TEACHING APPROACHES AND STRATEGIES
There are various teaching, strategies and approaches.
A.TEACHING APPROACHES
Learner centered verses teacher centered approaches
Teacher centered approach teaching and assessing are separate whereas in learner centered teaching and assessing are intertwined or inter-twisted.
In teacher centered approach the instructor role is to be primary information giver and primary evaluator whereas in learner centered approach the instructor and the students evaluate learning together
Teacher centered approach assessment is used to monitor learning whereas learners centered approach assessment is to promote and diagnose learning
Teacher centered approach emphasis is on the right answers whereas learners centered emphasis is on generating better questions and learning from errors.
Teacher centered approach only students are viewed as learners whereas learners centered approach instructor and students learn together.
Examples of teaching approaches
Lecture method –This is a teaching method where the teacher uses verbal messages to communicate the content of instruction to the learners.
There are two forms of lecture method
* Formal lecture-this involves a one way communication from the teacher to the students .Students activities are limited.
* Informal Lecturer –involves two way communication from the teacher to student or student to teacher .It is recommended in colleges and universities
Advantages of lecture method:
An instructor can cover a large amount of content within a short time
It is economical in that it requires few resources
It can be stimulating to the students if well delivered.
It is easy to prepare
It is suitable for large class
Disadvantages of lecture method:
It is not effective for slow learners
It is not effective in learning complex skills
Learners are passive and therefore there is limited learning
Discussion method –This is where the students under the teacher direction exchange points of view in order to arrive at a collective conclusion
There are two forms of the discussion method:
a) Expository-oriented discussion –Here the teacher present his objective, explains the learning activity demonstrate it and invites questions from student
b). Inquiry-oriented discussions where the teacher state the objectives arrange for discussions to take place and allows the student to discuss and arrive at conclusive.
Advantage of discussion method
Increase learners participation
Allows student to share ideas
Provide learners with opportunity to acquire language and manipulating organization skills.
Disadvantage of discussion
Consumes a lot of time
Require a lot of resources
Difficult to use for a large class.
Demonstration method -Here the teacher or the student can demonstrate or show to do something.
A teacher may use demonstration for the following reasons.
* When the experiment is dangerous
* When the experiment is expensive
* When the resources are limited.
* When there is limited time
Advantages of demonstration
Economical in terms of resource use
If the teacher demonstrates the results are more accurate
It motivates learners and makes learning interesting.
Disadvantages of demonstration.
Require a lot of time.
Not suitable for a large group.
Case study –Are stories scenarios often in narrative form created and used as tool for analysis and discussion .They have been used in higher education ,particularly in business and law .
Case study is effective way to get students to practically apply their skills,their understanding of learned facts ,to a real world situation .
Advantages of case study
Encourage higher order thinking.
Facilitates creative problem solving.
Engages student in research and reflective discussions
Enable the student to apply previously acquired skills
Create an opportunity for student to learn from one another
Bridges the gap between a more teacher-centered, lectured and pure problem based learning.
Disadvantages
Time consuming –
