The following paper examines the article “Living under the Sea.” It will include the article’s summary, an opinion on the article, and physical concepts learned in class, which apply to the paper. The article deals with the conditions experienced when venturing under the sea. Not only a quick swim or a small plunge, but also experiments are done to see how long the human body will tolerate water friction, and what it’s like to survive such fluid physical environments, both within and outside the dwellings. The most severe consequences include altered judgment, motor skills, acute injury, or death. Macinnis (2015) discusses the “continents” that make up most of the unexplored ocean floor, the physical hazards to the body when exploring deep waters, and the barriers that can be encountered, ranging from low visibility to dangerous marine animals.
Hyperoxia and hypoxia are the critical hazards discussed; hyperoxia occurs when the body receives too much oxygen, and hypoxia occurs when the body does not receive enough oxygen. According to Macinnis (2015), ‘acute hyperoxia can damage the central nervous system to result in twitching as well as convulsions of muscles. Hyperoxia affects the gas exchange process in the lung.’ Furthermore, Macinnis also explains that the optimum oxygen level varies and includes several factors, such as the duration of the dive, the depth of the dive.
