The story "The Life You Save May Be Your Own by Flannery O'Connor" focuses on the essence of redemption and salvation. The title of the story takes the approach of a warning or a reminder. It tends to apply to the main characters in the story including Mrs. Cater and Shiftlet who need to change their lives before they experience moral bankruptcy. As the story progresses, Shiftlet appears to be in search of something. He only believes that the meaning of life can only be found from material possessions rather than people or spirituality. Despite his quest for the material possessions, he does not find any meaning in them.
