Tartuffe: An Explication
Tartuffe the play is entirely set in Orgon’s house and the play opens when Pernelle decides to leave her son Orgon’s house because she finds their behavior immoral and decadent. She sees her grandson, Damis, as a brat and her granddaughter, Marriane, as too fragile. Only new house guest, Tartuffe, who earns her approbation. After the departure of Pernelle, the servant, Dorine, and Orgon’s brother in-law, Cleante discuss how they might convince Oregon that Tartuffe is manipulating him. When Orgon returns, Cleante is seen begging him to watch out Tartuffe’s act; however, Orgon waxes poetic on how he observed Tartuffe’s pious poverty as well as humility. Cleante on the other side is seen much concerned when Orgon dodges Marriane impending questions about marriage.
