Summary
“Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” by an American surgeon Atul Gawande is a non-fiction book that addresses hospice care and the present shape of care in relation to the age-related group. In this book, the author also talks about the serious illnesses as well as impending death and his reflections are combined with personal narratives. Using investigative approaches, Gawande draws on his families, patients and even traverse various healthcare and other caregiving institutions to confront death and see how certain approaches like hospice and palliative care can significantly improve people’s knowledge, acceptance as well as death preparation. Gawande expresses his utmost disappointment for the contemporary medicine; they believed caregiver of the dying group and their families. in this case, the author tries to make us understand that, the current caregiving relies much on techniques or industrial models that it disregards the profound desires of the dying patients and instead, offer them a side of "warehoused oblivion" (p. 188), for instance, long and ineffective stays in ICUs.
