Character Analysis in a Raisin in the Sun
Introduction
In the course of writing literature, it is often ubiquitous for playwrights, novelists and other kinds of authors to showcase themes and styles through characters. Characters are used to advance specific thematic topics or showcase the proficiency of other characters. Often, characters may be given similar characteristics to show similarity in their roles or experiences; or be given different features to showcase variabilities in the development of a story. A Raisin in the Sun play by Lorraine Hansberry proves the assertion by pitting two main characters: Walter Lee Younger and Lena Younger (Hansberry, 1959). Although seemingly connected and similar in many ways, they differ based on their characters and thematic roles. Lena Younger and her son Walter both possess virtues and a belief for future prosperity; while they differ on the value, they place on family and material possession.
