In Praise of Shadows
In praise of shadows, Junichiro Tanizaki is talking about conservative Japanese aesthetics rather than the westernization of the nation. Tanizaki venture into all aspects of lives from what one should eat, the type of clothing that should be worn by women, how toilets ought to look alike and how they ought to be understood and the interior design of a traditional room. All this contradicts with the modern times life style.
Tanizaki fundamental topic is, the title shadows. Shadows are fundamental to the customary Japanese aesthetic, but in advanced times, one can't value the brilliance of a traditional Japanese room or lacquer ware beautified with gold and silver (Tanizaki 1977), on the grounds that these were intended to exploit the dimmer lighting of times past, and contain a delight which just does not exist in a room lit by the modern lighting.
