The Injustice Never Leave You: Anti-Mexican Violence in Texas
Monica Muñoz Martinez’s new book is a major contribution to understanding the violence against the ethnic Mexicans and the struggles to remember the violence. The book describes the violence of 1910 and 1920, when the vigilantes, law enforcers and Texas Rangers killed ethnic Mexicans without impunity. Over a hundred years, the act of vigilantism challenged the study of the violence which occurred between the United States and Mexico border. The victims were native Mexican predominately in the remote rural areas, this enables the perpetrators to exercise impunity without scrutiny. The perpetrators participated in violence leaving behind no evidence including; deaths certificates, police records, and court orders. Martinez estimates that about five thousand Mexican lost their lives. The author examines the impacts of violence on victims' families, community and public after violence.
Method and Style
Martinez applies a unique methodology which addresses the ways perpetrators illegal should be dealt with by the state. This forms the pillar of her book. Also, individual events are used to portray the similarities among the Rangers and the private members acting on behalf of the state. Martinez’s book applies a methodology that chronicles several instances of savagery and then examines ways the perpetrator defended their action. The book comprises of an introduction, six chapters, and an epilogue. The author applies a different event or style to address Anti-Mexican violence. The first event in the book involves the mob violence which happened in Texas, ‘lynching of Antonio Rodriguez in Rocksprings, murder of Jesus Bazan,’ and Antonio Longoria near the Sam Lane ranch north of Edinburg”. The 1918 massacre of fifteen Mexicans in Porvenir chapter three. Martinez book has different information in each chapter which depicts exhaustive research done in archives in the United States and Mexico. Besides, she gathered detailed information from oral history interviews which gave crucial on the original happening during the violence and aftermath. This gives long term information on original and innovative work of Martinez which is essential in providing information on the impacts of the violence. The organization style of the narrative has remarkably explored the struggles the individual encounter after the violence. Martinez emphasis this narrative through exploring the long struggle which encounters the family and friends of the victim of Porvenir attack. Similarly, chapter three, is the most interesting part where Martinez postulates “three crucial development in the struggle to remember the violence”2. The key developments were divided into three sections. First, the efforts of the United States soldiers and witness provided at the end of chapter three. Second, the efforts of child witness Juan Flores and filmmaker Gode Davis to not let the story forgotten. Third, the preservation of written materials on the massacre through the creation of the Harry Warren archives at Ross State University. The narrative in the book continues to explain the historical memory and the resulting damage from the extralegal violence.
Authors Choice, Judgment, and effectiveness
For instance, narratives continuous to examine the author’s choice of investigating the information launched by one member of the Texas Ranger named Jose Canals in 1919. Martinez’s investigation revealed that most of the perception was in support of the racial violence subject to blacks and the ethnic Mexicans, while the culture applauded Canals bravery. The author examines how the devastating impacts the present media such as “postcards, museums and ancient photographs depicts to the victims in an attempt to celebrate the history of the Texas Rangers”3. Furthermore, Martinez throughout the narrative provides judgments after interacting with the individual who is against Mexican violence. Martinez gives her account of the view on the interaction with the anti-Mexican population, including lynching photographs of 2009 and the discovery of Texas Rangers.
The book ends in with providing the recent efforts with the States, and private individuals are applying to provide more insight and truth of the violence. The book focuses on the Bob Bullock museum which is located in Texas where “Martinez was in the exhibit during the launches the book ‘Life and Death on the Border, 1910–1920”4. This gives the author an upper hand in understanding and analyzing the history of the violence predominantly in Texas.
