Araby by James Joyce is a fictitious short story that focuses on the life of young boy amid his middle age crisis while living with his uncle and auntie (Joyce 107). In this story, Joyce uses a descriptive language in the first person to bring to light the struggles of the young boy especially as he struggles to initiate a love relationship with a young lady described as Mangan’s sister in this piece of work. The story describes the life of the young boy during a period of winter detailing on his play with other children, his enthusiasm to start a love life with Mangan’s sister, and his relationship with his uncle and auntie.
Although this story appears to focus on the life of a young boy, this story appears to be symbolic of the life at North Richmond Street, a place that was marked by silence and the only noise came from boys who schooled at Christian Brothers’ institutions (107). Just like the young boy is growing to adulthood under challenges, this place is facing the same challenges during its growth process. For instance, the young boy suffers frustration when he promises to buy gift for Mangan’s sister when after visiting Bazaar, a promise that never comes to pass because his uncle comes home late only for him to find most stalls in Bazaar already closed (111). This appears to communicate the difference between idealization and the real life that people in this region must face. They too must struggle like the young boy, though frustration is inevitable.
