The late Depression culture was dominated by the grape of the wrath and gone with the wind. These two novels were both top sellers in 1936, 1937 and 1939. They were renewed and opened as movies in 1940 with grape of the wrath opening on January 24, 1940, and gone with the wind opening on December 15, 1939. Critics reacted in a different way to each film. However, historians and critics of the films addressed the reluctance Hollywood had when addressing depression problems. Both films were helpful since they showed to the people the things they preferred and lost. Gone with the wind possessed an important gauge of historical validity which saw it for focused on the difficulties of surviving in the times of social upheavals and financial depression.
Both movies demonstrated a longing for a way of life in the agrarian way, which was replaced by a new economic force of industrialization and capitalism. Grape of Wrath dealt with issues which were painful and recognizable to be made in the thirties. This movie emphasized on the conditions which faced the Joads. These conditions included the roads losing their home which lead to them losing the connection they had with their land. Tom the main character returns from prison to be met with the vacant, dilapidated family house he lived in and the loss of their land. He and many farmers in their region have to deal with various problems, which include starvation, harassments from the policemen, loss of their homes. But on all these issues they can work together to ensure improved conditions of living.
