How did the life of Antoine Saint-Exupery affect his writing?
Antoine Saint-Exupery was a renowned French writer as well as a pioneer aviator. In his career as a writer, he managed to be a laureate of different French awards that came from the recognition of his writing. Antoine is best remembered for the “The Little Prince” novel. His life influenced his writing career in numerous ways. Antoine is also remembered for other lyrical aviation writings that include Sand and Stars, Wind and Night Flight etc (Clark 38-40).
Antoine Saint-Exupery was born in 1900. Four years later, his father died forcing the family to shift to Le Mans in 1909. Antoine gained his early childhood education at Jesuit Centre. The majority of the events that accompanied him in his life had a significant influence on his writing. As an example, much to his dismay, Antoine failed his exams at the university preparatory school. This failure had a significant influence on his artwork as he was forced to enroll at the Ecole des Beaux-Art Centre where he focused on studying architecture. After several failed attempts to enter the Navy as he was still in the Beaux Arts Centre, he focused more on architecture. In 1921, Antoine joined the French Air Force as a mechanic in Strasbourg, where he learned to be a pilot. This career path shaped his writing career too.
Antoine ’s social life also contributed to his writing career. He married a widow in 1931. However, he neglected her as he did not pay the necessary attention to her. Increased rumors of her being engaged in other affairs led to a breakup. Due to this poor social life, friends approached him and influenced him to do some writing. The pressure from his social life enabled him to come up with the book “Pilot’s Confessions, Wind, Sand and Stars”. Since he did not have a family, he spent so much time in this book that it managed to win the Grand Prix du Roman of the French academy. The book also won the National book award of the US in 1939 (Webster 65-70).
It is notable that immediately after the armistice between France and Germany, Antonio headed into exile in the northern part of America through and escape route in Portugal. This move in his life influenced his writing career. He managed to arrive at the New York city in 1940 where he developed the intention to convince the United States to intervene the conflict against Nazi Germany. During this personal visit, Antonio got an opportunity to meet over one thousand authors who inspired him to finish his book that received a national book award. During the same period, Consuelo accompanied him to New York and Antonio improved his writing experience by contributing to the autobiography of the Kingdom of the Rocks.
The military life drove Antoine to advance his writing skills. As an example, his first novel “Southern Mail” demonstrated a celebration that he had for the early pilots. He prepared this novel after learning the degree of courage that the early pilots had as they flew at the limits of safety. In his aviation career, he also noticed how the early pilots could manage to win a commercial advantage over rail as well as the steamship rivals
In 1926, Antoine’s first tale, “L’Aviateur”, was published. Two years later, he became the director of a remote Cap Juby field that was located in the Rio de Oro region. Antoine’s life in this Saharan land influenced his writing too. During the period in the Sahara region, he lived in a wooden ramshackle residence. He also spent the night on a very thin mattress that gave him extreme discomfort. During his life in this Saharan region, he felt that his life was secluded and this drove him to write his novel “The little Prince and the “Wisdom of the Sands”. When he resided in the Saharan region, Antoine wrote this book with the aim of demonstrating his love for the desert life.
Antoine Saint-Exupery made a flight to South America in 1929 and he was pointed the director of the Aeroposta Company in Argentina. This position also had a significant influence on his writing career. The experiences he gained in this position gave him the ideas for his second book “Night Flight” that later became an international bestselling book and won the Prix Femina award. In his position as the director of the Aeroposta Company, he managed to offer the descriptions of Rivière, a renowned hard-bitten chief at the airport, who had already retired and accepted the task of flying the mail as his destiny (Saint-Exupéry 78-92).
Antonio’s return from Quebec was accompanied by stress and illness. This condition influenced him to make one of the most famous children’s books. His stressful condition attracted the attention of one of his female publishers who supported him in preparing the content of the book. The children’s book was aimed at calming down Antonio’s nerves. This desire to overcome his stressful condition enabled him to improve his writing as he wanted to compete with Mary Poppins’ series.
During his aviation career, in December 1935, Antoine together with his navigator Prevot Andre crashed within the Saharan desert. After the crash, they were rescued by the Bedouin caravan. This crash also influenced Antonio’s writing career as he was forced to stick to it after the recovery in 1936. The very first work he wrote after returning to his writing career was to cover the May events in Moscow. In the same year, war broke in Europe. Due to the crash, Antoine could not serve in the aviation industry. He, thereby, had sufficient time to cover the events as general Franco through the support of Adolf Hitler made efforts to overthrow the Spanish government. During this period, Antoine prepared a series of articles that explained the causes and the influence of the war on the French newspapers. His publications on the “Intransigent” newspaper improved his writing popularity as a massive population followed his articles that talked about the causes and effects of the war (Kennedy 40-42).
Four years later, Antoine recovered and made a comeback in the aviation industry. He purchased a new aircraft to accomplish his mission. Unfortunately, he suffered another flight crash in 1938 and thus, it subjected him to more severe injuries from which he could not recover. The experience, thereby, led him to publish more writings. As an example, he published the “Terre des Hommes” which translated to the land of men. This publication explained various flying expe...
