The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven
Discrimination is simply an unjust or unfair treatment towards a person or a group of individuals. The theme of discrimination is clearly depicted in both ‘Every Little Hurricane’ and ‘Indian education’ short stories of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven book.
In the short story Every Little Hurricane, the writer clearly illustrates discrimination based on racism against the Indians. Firstly, the Indians were secluded in reserves away from the white people. The reserves were characterized by poverty and it was hard to afford certain common luxuries such as Christmas gifts. For instance, in one instance the narrator indicates that ‘‘father wept because he didn’t have any money for gifts’'. The narrator further describes how worse the racism situation was that the Indians could be spat on – ‘‘his father was spit on as they waited for a bus’’ (Alexie 6). In the second story, the narrator describes the discrimination in school. The discrimination was castigated by both the teachers and the students. For example, in the first paragraph of the story, the narrator indicates “they pushed me down, buried me in the snow until I couldn’t breathe’’ (Alexie 172). He was discriminated because he was considered weakly. There was also racism in school by the European teachers. Indians kids were punished for mistakes they didn’t commit.
