Book Summary of “The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature-Deficit Disorder” by Richard Louv
Written by Richard Louv and published by Algonquin Books in the year 2012, The Nature Principle remains one of the most inspirational books that merge science with reality to give indications about the future. According to Louv, the conception of ideas of sustainability and provision of adequate support to environmentalism are keys to various successes in the future. Louv involves interplay of a number of important factors in what he views as the new nature movement.
In this movement, the most likely to survive are individuals with intellectual insight as well as unending abilities to remain creative in ways of tackling various challenges that surround them. In this way, such personalities are likely to experience improved levels of health and wellness as a result of effort, if they are to have businesses, then these are likely to be smarter and more sustainable in the business world for survival. In this sense, such individuals or areas they dominate will then experience improved lifestyles in better economies, and stronger bonds among humans. In his quote at the beginning of the book, Louv indicates that thriving in the future is dependent on “nature-smartness.” This is again facilitated by the ability to understand and perceive the “transformative power of the natural world.” Further yet, he indicates that success in the future is also dependent on an individual’s ability to balance virtuosity and reality in attempts to manipulate the world.
The book is organized into five parts and an epilogue, all of which are contained in 352 pages. In part one, Louv handles the topic of Nature Neurons. This is further divided into intelligence, creativity, and discussions about the mind named; hybrid mind (1-21). Part two deals with processes involved in tapping energy and power that is bestowed in nature. These are meant to be used for families’ physical and emotional wellness. Thus the subtopics in this part include Fountains of Life, Re-Naturing Psyche, The Deep Green High, and The Nature Prescription (43-90).
Part three and part four of the book majorly talk about the individual in nature, how much they are aware of themselves and how much they are aware of and can manipulate their environment. Thus, chapter three summarily deals with knowing one’s true identity, being one’s true self, and welcoming a neighborhood to bond and forge life together (91-155). One the other hand, part four handles topics that equip an individual with the abilities relevant for perceiving and taking advantages of opportunities in the world that would propel them to heights of ac...
