Introduction
In Osnos book, “Age of Ambition” forecasts two potent and antagonist forces that are political structure and swelling individualism structure in China that controls it through shaping the rising superpower journalists in revealing journalist portrait (Osnos 37). The New York writer or rather Osnos and a former Beijing magazine correspondent sling his prospect on intense first-hand profiles of writers, artists, liberal students, economist, editors and conservative entrepreneurs along with famous imprisoned Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiao Bo (Osnos 6). Through the named people stories’ Osnos depicts individuals’ navigation in a dizzying shift from socialist austerity, idealism, and conformity to what is termed capitalist materialism along with self-promotion. The socialism of the country steeped in a vehement dogma, as Osnos spies everything from English to tour guide pattern that is full of private doubt as they struggle to look for enticement and social connection in an aggressive economy (Osnos 39). The author merges scintillating reportage along with the intensity of irony illuminating broader trend deprived of moderating Chinese unique society making its tension more familiar in an arching thought in western readers.
Osnos give a great emphasis on the collision between the aspiration and authoritarianism; a conundrum initiated by the communist's party commitment to twin unrestricted pillar capitalism as well as controlled minutes over every aspect of the society (Osnos 243). The author traces these policies to championing and formulation Lin Yifu, a Taiwan citizen that defected to mainland China in 1979 and embalmed an influential policymaker within the party and became the chief economist at the World Bank (Osnos 149). Individual such as decollated and well know film-makers such as Feng Xiaogang along with Murong Xuecun are considered more successful than others due to the system outlined by Osnos of “Working the Angles” but ultimately they miscalculated.
The individual versus collective culture contradicts on an underlying tension where the notion of individuality still contains negative connotation. With the knowledge of gauging the constant shifting mood of individuals and the authority at any given moment and judging how to push the boundaries becomes the key to surviving in the system. Working the angles as Osnos puts it, explains rag to riches through the rise of super journalists like Hu Shuli (Osnos 122). Hu ran the Caijing magazine that uncovered the corrupt government scandals, yet it becomes contradicting as he raked in millions of dollars through advertisement of the very company its report accused of being corrupt and mismanagement issues. The latter became part of every artist or rather any artist inclusive of famous individual as Osnos indicates the name of these individuals as Ai Weiwei, Liu Xiaobo, and Han Han.
The Age of Ambition centralized accounts of shrewd analysis of the battle in the middle of the corrupt, flagrantly communist party and the authoritarianism (Osnos 118). The internet based bourgeois culture mock and dissent characterized by the application of leaking government secrets of censorship rule immediately they are decreed. Most of the detailed portraits of politicians, strivers and dissidents make the panorama of the evolving contemporary China. In the book, the six-minute YouTube video, “China Stands Up!” by Tang Jie drew more that million and the most positive comments (osnos 144). This was deeply hurt by the international criticism of China as well as infuriated by pro-Tibet protest in the rise of Olympic flame through Europe, Tang was then motivated to criticize deep-seated and unfair suspicion of China and by the America. The contemporary China is at wrangles at the internet between the urban educated class and the uneasy way through which China is positioning itself in the world (Osnos 6).
