During the opening of Terminal 5(T5) of Heathrow airport, both passenger and authorities faced numerous problems. On the first day of operations, British Airways was forced to terminate more than thirty flights due to issues with baggage control, security searches, the building itself, and parking. The reasons for this failure can be attributed to improper staff and management communication, poor or inadequate training, and leadership. This case analysis examines in depth what went wrong and the various recommendations that could be instituted to prevent such mishaps.
Feed forward is the most desirable option for the problems at T5 because it prevents problems before they occur. T5’s management should have should have evaluated their options and put in place a contingency plan. Therefore, a contingency plan alongside scaled down operations would have prevented this problems rather than waiting to correct damages (Robbins & Coulter, n.d.). In addition, immediate and basic corrective actions at T5 would have played a key role in managing the mishaps at British Airways. These corrective actions involve training staff on effective baggage handling and giving them sufficient time to familiarize with the system. Furthermore, the airport ought to install alternative software for the conveyor belt if the present one failed.
