1 How does the author want the reader to feel while reading "The Cask of Amontillado"?
The author wants readers of to feel some sense of suspicion and exhaustion. I just got this feeling from the first paragraph throughout the entire text. For instance, the very first two sentences indicate that the narrator has sworn revenge and is threatened. Then, after a few sentences, the narrator said, "I continued to smile on his face according to my habit. He did not realize that my smile now was the thought of his self-immolation.” (Poe, 2008)

Poe, (2008) utilizes different and unique terms in the passage to describe the sense of looking and feeling in the scene and the behavior, including the appearance of the characters. For instance, the narrator wants readers to regard Fortunato as more of a stupid person, so although Fortunato may not dress like him, the author argues that he wears a hat with bell and bright clothes just like a clown. This is to make us treat you as a fool. The author also uses words such as "wet", "cold", "cautious", and "distressed" to make the context and mood appear dark and full of suspense.
